4 US Soldiers, 35 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks

Yaqin.net reported that five policemen were killed today, September 8, 2009, in a blast in Tuz Khurmato. They were investigating an earlier blast which killed an "anti-terrorism" chief (See below).

Iraqi soldier killed in eastern Mosul

An Iraqi soldier was killed by gunmen in eastern Mosul on Tuesday, according to a security source.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire on an Iraqi army soldier while on duty at an Iraqi army checkpoint in al-Methaq neighborhood in eastern Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. patrol rocketed in Kirkuk without damage

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. patrol was attacked on Tuesday in southwestern Kirkuk, without causing damage, a source from the joint coordination center said.

“One U.S. patrol was attacked by a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launched by unknown gunmen in al-Seray neighborhood in al-Huwaiyja district, southwest of Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Police forces rushed to the area,” he said, noting that the attack caused no damage.

Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

4 U.S. servicemen killed in two incidents

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four U.S. soldiers were killed in two separate explosions in southern and north of Baghdad, raising the U.S. fatalities in September to six, the U.S. army said on Tuesday.

“A Multi-National Corps – Iraq service member was killed today when an improvised explosive device targeting the patrol detonated in southern Baghdad at approximately 10: 30 a.m,” said the U.S. army in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Three U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq in an improvised explosive device targeting their patrol in north of Iraq on Tuesday (Sept. 8),” another statement said.

The deaths bring the total number of U.S. fatalities since the start of the invasion in March 2003 to 4,342, including 110 in 2009.

Blast near Kirkuk kills 2 cops

Two policemen on Tuesday were killed and four others were injured in an explosive charge blast near Kirkuk, according to a local police chief.

“Today, an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near Taza district (10 km south of Kirkuk) while a police patrol vehicle was passing the location, killing two cops and injuring four others,” Brig. Sarhad Qader told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The dead were taken to the morgue, while the wounded were rushed to the hospital for treatment,” the official noted.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Toll from Baghdad blast reaches 13

Casualties from the explosive charge blast that occurred in eastern Baghdad earlier today have reached 13, according to an Iraqi police source.

“Today, an explosive charge hit a vehicle carrying employees from the Health Ministry on Falasteen St., eastern Baghdad, killing one of them and injuring 12 others, including eight civilians,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

2 policemen wounded in blast near Anbar

Three police personnel on Tuesday were injured when an explosive device hit their patrol vehicle in al-Rutba district, west of Anbar, according to a security source.

“Today, a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in downtown al-Rutba district near a police patrol vehicle, wounding two patrolmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The wounded included a police captain,” the source explained. “The wounded were taken to the hospital for treatment,” it noted, adding that all roads leading to the scene of the blast have been blocked.

Al-Rutba district lies 330 km west of Ramadi, the capital city of Anbar province, which lies 110 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Anti-terrorism chief killed in blast

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: The director of an anti-terrorism department on Tuesday was killed in an explosive charge blast near Touz Khormato, according to a local security source.

“The director of the anti-terrorism department in Amerli district, Lt. Col. Zayd Hussein Khalaf, was killed and three of his security guards were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near Janjaly village, southern al-Touz district (80 km south of Kirkuk),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Suicide blast in Diala leaves 27 casualties

At least five civilians were killed and 22 others were wounded Monday in a suicide blast in central Ba'aquba, according to a security source.

“A suicide bomber blew an explosive belt strapped to his body targeting Abdulkarim al-Medani mosque in central Ba'aquba, killing five civilians and injuring 22,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The number of death toll most likely to increase,” he added, noting that the Shiite mosque is the biggest in Diala.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

4 civilians killed, 7 wounded in oil tank explosion in Karbala

Four civilians were killed and seven others were wounded in an oil tank explosion in the east of Karbala, a media official said.

“The oil tank of a small bus went off on Monday (Sept. 7) in al-Ibrahimiya region, east of Karbala, killing four civilians, including the Karbala club soccer player, Ameer Saadi, and injuring seven others,” Major Alaa Abbas told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He gave no more details.

Karbala is 110 km southwest of Baghdad.

Sticky bomb kills civilian, injures 8 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One civilian was killed and eight others were wounded by a sticky bomb in northern Baghdad on Monday, a police source said.

“A bomb, stuck to a civilian vehicle, went off on Monday afternoon (Sept. 7) near a police checkpoint near al-Nedaa mosque in al-Suleikh neighborhood in northern Baghdad,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion killed the driver and injured eight people, including two policemen and damage the vehicle,” he added.

“Security forces sealed off the region, while ambulances rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he noted.

Hand grenade kills 2 brothers in Kirkuk

Two children were killed on Monday in a hand grenade blast in central Kirkuk, a source from the joint coordination center said.

“The two brothers were killed when the hand grenade went off inside their house in Teseen neighborhood in central Kirkuk,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that the explosion damage the house.

“Police carried the bodies to the morgue at the Azadi hospital in Kirkuk and sealed off the region,” he added.

Casualties from Ramadi blast reach 26

Casualties from the car bomb blast that ripped through Ramadi’s al-Jazeera area have reached 26, including eight dead, according to a local police source.

“The dead included three police personnel, while the wounded, 18, included three in a critical condition,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The highway linking Ramadi to al-Khalidiya was blocked and tight security measures have been put in place, the source noted. Earlier today, the same source said that a suicide bomber detonated his car bomb near a police checkpoint in al-Jazeera area, western Ramadi, leaving an unknown number of casualties.

Ramadi, the capital city of Anbar province, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

IED kills civilian in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: One civilian on Monday was killed when an explosive device went off in a Diala neighborhood, according to a local security source.

“Today, an improvised explosive device (IED) hit a motorbike in al-Mafraq area, downtown Baaquba, killing its driver,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Security forces have stepped up their presence in al-Mafraq neighborhood and neighboring areas, including al-Katoun neighborhood, where three policemen were wounded in a bomb blast yesterday, according to the same source.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Cop, sons killed, wounded in Ninewa blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman and three of his sons were killed or wounded when a sticky explosive charge targeted his vehicle near Mosul city, according to a local police source.

“During a late hour last night, Col. Silal Taha from Ninewa’s Police Academy was killed along with one of his sons when a sticky explosive device targeted his vehicle in Talkeef district (15 km north of Mosul),” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Two more of his sons, who were inside the car, were injured in the blast that occurred near an Asayesh (Kurdish for security) checkpoint,” the source noted.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
