THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

A roadside bomb went off on Monday near a convoy of the U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team (P.R.T) southwest of Nassiriya city, causing no casualties or damage.

“A local-made anti-shields bomb went off at 9:30 am on Monday (Aug. 23) in southwest of Nassiriya targeting two vehicles of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (P.R.T),” the Thi-Qar police department said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion left no damage or casualties,” the statement added.

Nassiriya, the capital city of Thi-Qar province, lies 380 km south of Baghdad.

4 of refinery staff killed in Anbar

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four civil servants working for the Haditha Refinery were killed on Tuesday in an armed attack in western the al-Anbar province.

“Unknown gunmen used light arms today to open fire targeting a civilian car driven by four civil servants working for the Haditha refinery, western the al-Anbar province,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He explained that the incident occurred after the four victims received their salaries in the al-Seniya district of Haditha.

“The victims’ car was stopped by the gunmen who then opened fire,” the source added giving no more details.

Ramadi, the capital city of the Anbar province, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

1 Kurdish security killed, 1 student abducted in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

One Kurdish security element was killed and one student was abducted in two separate attacks in central Kirkuk city.

“Unknown gunmen driving a civilian car opened fire late yesterday night targeting another civilian car driven by a Kurdish security element, leaving him dead in central Kirkuk,” a local security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Tuesday.

“Another group of unknown gunmen driving a civilian pickup truck kidnapped on Tuesday a student from before his house in central Kirkuk,” the source added.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

IED wounds 3 civilians west of Basra

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three civilians were wounded on Tuesday in an explosion in west of Basra, according to a security source.

“The bomb went off targeting a U.S. convoy on Mohammad al-Qassem road, west of Basra, injuring three civilians, and damaging a U.S. Hummer vehicle and a civilian car,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

For his part, the media advisor of the U.S. army in Iraq, Nader Suleiman, denied any attack on U.S. troops in Basra or in its surrounding areas.

Basra is 590 km south of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill 7 Baiji refinery’s employees

SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq:

Unknown gunmen killed seven employees of the Baiji refinery and seized their salaries, according to a source from local police department.

“An armed group attacked a vehicle of the Baiji refinery, western Baiji, killing seven employees, assigned to bring the salaries,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that they stole 750 million dinars.

The operation came one day after stealing the salaries of the Faculty of Veterinary of Baghdad University (700 million dinars) in al-Khadraa neighborhood in western Baghdad.

Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

IED kills, wounds 2 civilians north of Ba'aquba

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

One civilian was killed and another one was wounded Monday in a bomb explosion in north of Baaquba, a police source said.

“An improvised explosive device went off near a motorcycle in al-Azim region, north of Ba'aquba, killing a civilians and injuring another one,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
