31 Somalis Killed in Al-Shabab Attack on Government Officials

August 24, 2010

Six MPs among 31 killed in Somalia

Press TV, Tue, 24 Aug 2010 13:19:09 GMT

Al-Shabab fighters have stormed a hotel close to the presidential palace in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, killing at least 31 people, including six members of the parliament.

Authorities said on Tuesday al-Shabab fighters attacked the hotel where parliament members and government officials were staying. The ensuing clashes claimed the lives of at least dozens of civilians and some government forces, a Press TV correspondent reported.

"Couple of al-Shabab militants fired indiscriminately against civilians in Muna Hotel in Mogadishu killing 31, including hotel staff," read a statement by the Somali Ministry of Information. This is while earlier reports had put the number of parliament members killed in Tuesday's raid at 15. The attack came a day after 29 civilians were killed and over 100 others were injured following two days of violence in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab fighters blame the Somali government and African Union troops for civilian deaths, saying they had only targeted government and foreign forces. Somalia has been grappling with a deadly civil war that began after the collapse of its central government and the ouster of Mohammed Siad Bare in 1991. JR/CS/MMN
