Yafa Palestinian Community Forces Israeli Employer to Reinstate Muslim Woman Employee After Firing her Over Head Covering

Editor's Note:

This news story is a lesson to be learned by Muslim communities around the world. Employers and politicians, who encroach on the right of Muslim women to wear head covering should be answered with popular boycott campaigns, demonstrations, and rallies. Campaigns should continue against such employers until their businesses are negatively affected and against such politicians until they lose their jobs.

Yafa woman fired over hijab returns to work
August 24, 2010
QALQILIYA (Ma'an) --
A Palestinian woman with Israeli citizenship returned to work on Tuesday as a cashier for an Israeli supermarket in the occupied Palestinian city of Yafa (Jaffa) after she was dismissed for deciding to wear a Muslim head covering.

Ilham Karajah, who was fired for two days, was reinstated to her position after a meeting was held between Jaffa Municipal Council member Ahmad Al-Mash-harawi and the general manager of the Avi Shuq supermarket chain.

"I am glad Karajah returned to work ... Jaffa is a mixed city which is home to a large number of Arab citizens. The decision to discharge was negative and dangerous," said Al-Mash-harawi, adding that the community would have organized rallies and popular campaign had the decision not been overturned.
