15 Graves in the Mamilla Cemetery, Jerusalem, Desecrated

Thursday August 05, 2010 18:09 by Circarre Parrhesia - IMEMC & Agencies

Upwards of 15 graves in the Palestinian Muslim Cemetery of Mamilla, West Jerusalem, have been destroyed by Israeli occupation government bulldozers working on behalf of the so-called Jerusalem Municipality, under police protection.

The cemetery is a current site of conflict, with the Palestinian Muslim population claiming that the cemetery has been a burial site since the 7th century, and is the burial site of a great number of prominent residents of Jerusalem.

The reason for the desecration of the cemetery is particularly ironic desire of the Simon Wiesenthal Center to build the so-called “Center for Human Dignity”. Due to outcry over the controversial plans, world renowned architect, Frank Gerhy pulled out of the project in January of this year.

Yesterday, Israeli National News, Arutz Sheva, claimed that Palestinians had “faked” many of the graves in the cemetery, and the 15 destroyed were amongst those in their claims.
