Arab MPs Urge UNICEF to Probe Israel's Violations Against Palestinian Children

 [ 08/08/2010 - 05:19 PM ]

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)--

The Arab members of Israeli Parliament (Knesset) called in a letter sent to the UNICEF and the child safety council for investigating the incarceration conditions of Palestinian children in Israeli jails, especially after the report that was published days ago by Haaretz newspaper in this regard.

The lawmakers called in their letter on these two institutions to take this news report seriously and conduct full international probe into the conditions of Palestinian children in prison.

They noted that what was mentioned in the report is contrary to the international rights of children which were adopted in 1990.

Their letter emphasized that the security pretexts used by the Israeli government to justify its detention of the children are unacceptable, especially since Human rights organizations revealed that Israeli soldiers kidnap many children from their schools.

Haaretz newspaper had reported that Israel arrests 700 Palestinian children every year and bring them to court on charges of throwing stones at Israeli cars or troops and noted that 97 percent of them complained about their exposure to torture and 14 percent complained that they were sexually molested or received sexual threats.
