BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

One policeman and a civilian were killed and seven others were wounded in two separate incidents in Baghdad, a police source said on Friday.

“An explosive charge went off on Friday morning (Dec. 10) in al-Aalam region, western Baghdad, targeting a police vehicle patrol, killing a policeman and injuring two more,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Another bomb exploded inside a restaurant in al-Awierej region, southwestern Baghdad, killing a civilian and wounding five,” he added.

Policeman killed, 4 wounded in Tikrit

SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was killed and four others were wounded in an armed attack on a police checkpoint in west of Tikrit, a security source said on Friday.

“Unknown gunmen attacked early Friday (Dec. 10) a police checkpoint in al-Bu Ebeid village, west of Tikrit, killing a policeman and injuring four more,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more details.

Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din, is 175 km north of Baghdad.

2 cops, civilian wounded in Sulaimaniya

SULAIMANIYA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two policemen and a civilian were wounded Thursday during a demonstration in the city of Sulaimaniya, according to a medical source.

“A total of 300 persons staged a demonstration protesting the establishment of a fuel station on a land allocated by the regional government to set up a hospital,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Acts of violence started in the demo, during which two cops and a civilian were wounded,” he explained.

Sulaimaniya lies 364 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier dies of wounds in Wassit

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier died on Wednesday of wounds sustained by a sniper in north of Kut, according to a well-informed source.

“The soldier, who was seriously wounded this afternoon by a sniper in al-Nuaamaniya district, north of Kut, died,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that the medical team in al-Nuaamaniya military hospital failed to save his life as his wounds were deadly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A police source had said earlier that an unknown sniper shot a soldier of U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team while on duty in al-Nuaamaniya district, north of Kut. Kut, the capital of Wassit, is 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier wounded by sniper fire north of Kut

WASSIT / Aswat al-Iraq:

A U.S. soldier, working with the American Reconstruction Team in southern Iraq’s Wassit Province, has been injured by sniper fire north of Kut, a Wassit official said.

“An unknown sniper opened fire on Wednesday noon against a soldier working for the American Reconstruction Team, who had been carrying out his duty over the building of the Municipal Council of Nu’maniya township, 40 km to the north of Kut,” he added.

He said the wounded soldier was driven to a hospital belonging to the U.S. Army base in Nu’maniya township. Security forces cordoned off the area around the location around the venue of the attack, searching for the attacker.

Kut, the center of Wassit Province, is 180 km to the south of Baghdad.

US soldier, 2 Iraqi policemen killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD:

The US military says an American soldier has died in southern Iraq. In a statement released on Thursday, the military says the soldier was killed during operations on Wednesday in southern Iraq.

The statement gave no cause of death. It says the incident is under investigation. The death raises to at least 4,428 the number of US military personnel who have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

 Iraqi officials say attacks on a police patrol in northern Baghdad and a checkpoint north of the city killed two policemen early on Thursday. ap
