20 Pakistanis Killed in US Air Strike on South Waziristan

Foreigners among 20 Taliban killed in SWA drone strike

Three missiles target building in Shaktoee used by Uzbek fighters

Monday, January 18, 2010

The Daily Times (Pakistani Newspaper)

MIRANSHAH:

A US drone strike on Sunday killed at least 20 Taliban, including foreign fighters, in a South Waziristan area where local Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud reportedly escaped death days ago, said officials.

The attack took place in Shaktoee –40 kilometres southeast of Miranshah in North Waziristan – and security officials said US drones appeared to be tracking TTP chief Hakeemullah Mehsud. Sunday’s bombing was the 10th US drone strike to hit the tribal belt this month.

“The target was a Taliban compound,” said a security official in the area. “Twenty Taliban deaths have been confirmed.”

The AP news agency said the building was used by Uzbeks.

An intelligence official said that drone fired at least three missiles, and Taliban – who had ringed the demolished compound in the remote and mountainous area – were digging out bodies. “The drones are apparently tracking and targeting TTP chief Hakeemullah, whose presence is frequently reported in the area,” he said.

Another security official said it was too early to tell if any high-value targets were among the 20 killed.

A senior security official told Reuters that most of the casualties were foreigners.

Sources close to intelligence services say US efforts to track down Hakeemullah have been stepped up since a bomber targeted a CIA base in Afghanistan’s Khost province and the TTP chief claimed responsibility for the attack.

More than 700 people have been killed in about 80 US drone strikes in Pakistan since August 2008.

Unrest, however, continues: on Sunday, gunmen shot dead two anti-Taliban elders in Bajaur Agency, said officials.

Malik Abdul Qayyum, who had been earlier threatened by the Taliban, was sprayed with bullets while leaving his home on the outskirts of the region’s main town, local administration official Fazal Rabbi told AFP.

A roadside bomb killed another anti-Taliban tribal elder, Hukum Khan, 50, in Charmang district of Bajaur, said local official Ghulam Saeed. agencies
