European fleet arrives in Gaza by March, Says Government Committee

[ 25/01/2010 - 09:50 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

The Palestinian government Committee Against the Siege in Gaza has announced that a European fleet would set sail from Greece heading to Gaza Strip by end of March to break the Israeli siege on Gaza.

The committee in a statement on Sunday said that the fleet comprises 20 big and small ships from a number of European countries, and expected the number to increase.

It noted that the ships would be loaded with food and humanitarian relief material along with medicine, medical equipment and symbolic construction material such as cement, iron and others.

The biggest number of ships would be from Greece and Turkey along with others from Sweden and Italy, the committee said, noting that organizations aiding the Palestinian people would supervise the journey.

It pointed out that a number of European parliamentarians and solidarity activists would be aboard those ships.

For his part, MP Jamal Al-Khudari, the head of the Popular Anti-Siege Committee, welcomed the Greek initiative, and thanked the Greek human rights and peace societies for patronizing the sea voyage to Gaza.

Khudari, in a statement on Sunday, said that Greek MPs, senior figures and human rights and peace activists would be aboard those ships.

He said that the fleet's visit addresses a message to the world community mainly that it should pressure Israel into ending the siege imposed on one and a half million Palestinians for more than three years.
