54 American congressmen ask Obama to pressure Israel into lifting siege on Gaza

[ 26/01/2010 - 10:59 AM ]

WASHINGTON, (PIC)--

Members of the American Congress have asked president Barack Obama to pressure Israel to lift the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip for almost four years.

A statement signed by 54 congressmen said that the siege was impeding relief agencies from helping the citizens and providing their basic needs.

The signatories of the statement broadcast by Sawa radio on Tuesday said that besieging the Strip at the pretext of barring "terrorist operations" constituted a kind of collective punishment for the entire population of the Strip.

The statement was also signed by a number of relief and human rights agencies.

The signatories praised Obama's decision to allocate 300 million dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza after the latest Israeli war.
