Israeli War Planes Strike Gaza Tunnels, Workshop

Published today (updated) 26/07/2010 14:00

Bethlehem – Ma'an –

Israeli occupation forces warplanes struck two smuggling tunnels under the border in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah and a workshop in the north on Monday morning, with no injuries reported.

The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to rockets and mortar shells that were fired at Israel and hit the southern Negev over the weekend, describing the workshop as a weapons manufacturing site.

The southern border with Egypt and the blockaded Strip is frequently used to smuggle goods into Gaza through a subterranean tunnel complex. Israel has accused Palestinian groups of smuggling weapons into the Strip, while merchants say they are bringing in items barred by Israel's blockade, including food, clothing, cars, and construction material.

IOF warplanes blast Gaza tunnels

RAFAH, (PIC)--

Israeli occupation forces F-16 warplanes blasted tunnels in Rafah, in the southernmost tip of the Gaza Strip, along the Egyptian-Palestinian borders at dawn Monday, security sources reported.

They told the PIC reporter that the warplanes fired at least two missiles targeting two tunnels in Salam suburb east of Rafah and a third targeting a deserted tunnel west of the city without inflicting casualties.

The sources said that the warplanes returned later and raided empty land near the electricity generation station in Nusseirat in central Gaza.

A spokesman for the Israeli occupation forces claimed that the raids were in reprisal to the firing of rockets and mortar rounds at the western Negev late last week.
