Car bomb explodes near police officer in Diala

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A car bomb went off on Friday near the house of a police officer in Diala, according to a security source.

“A car crammed with explosives went off on Friday (June 18) targeting a house of Captain Mustapha al-Tamimi in al-Muaalameen neighborhood in Ba'aquba, leaving several casualties and destroying the house completely,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The captain works for the internal affairs department of the Diala police department,” he added.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

12 civilians killed, wounded in missiles attack in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four civilians were killed and eight others were wounded on Friday in missiles attack in west of Baghdad, according to a security source.

“Three missiles hit four houses in a village near the Baghdad international airport, killing four civilians and injuring eight,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The missiles caused severe material damage to the houses,” he added.

He did not give further details.

Gunmen kill 4 family members in Baghdad

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four civilians, from the same family, were killed by gunmen inside their House in western Baghdad, a police source said on Friday.

“Unknown gunmen stormed the house of a public employee in Arab Jaloub village in Abu Gharieb district, western Baghdad, early Friday (June 18), killing a man, his wife and his two children,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more details.

Officer, soldier wounded in 2 blasts in Talafar

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two explosive charges went off on Friday morning in northern Talafar near an Iraqi army force, injuring an officer and a soldier, an official police source said.

“An explosive device, planted by unknown gunmen in al-Salam neighborhood in northern Talafar, went off early Friday, without causing damage or casualties,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Another bomb exploded as a force from the 10th brigade of the 3rd division of the Iraqi army were deploying in the area after the explosion, injuring a soldier and an officer, who were rushed to the Talafar public hospital for treatment,” he added.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Chairman of Sahwa council escapes 2 assassination attempts

Chairman of the Sahwa councils survived two attempts on his life on Friday in southwest of Baaquba, a media official said.

“A container carrying C4 went off early Friday (June 18) targeting chairman of the Sahwa council, Houssam al-Majmaai, on the main road of al-Bazoul village in Bani Saad district, southwest of Baaquba,” Ahmad Abdullah told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The blast did not hurt him,” he added.

“He survived another attempt when explosives experts defused a bomb before it explodes near his motorcade,” he said.

“This is the fifth attempt on al-Majmaai’s life since the establishment of the Sahwa councils on October 3, 2009,” Abdullah noted.

Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Policeman wounded in Mosul blast

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

A policeman was wounded from a hand-grenade blast in western Mosul city on Thursday, a local security source in Ninewa said.

“A man threw a hand-grenade near a police checkpoint in 17 Tammuz neighborhood, western Mosul, leaving one policeman severely wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The explosion targeted patrols of the 7th emergency police contingent in the neighborhood,” he added, noting the assailant escaped to an unknown place.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-ridden province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

2 cops killed, 3 wounded in Diala attack

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Two policemen were killed and three others wounded in an attack with an improvised explosive device (IED) that targeted their headquarters in eastern Diala province on Thursday, according to a local official.

“An IED went off near al-Quds police station in al-Mukhisa village, Abi Saida, al-Muqdadiya district, (45 km) east of Baaquba, leaving two policemen killed and three others injured,” Awwad al-Rubaie, a member of the Abi Saida municipal council, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A security source, who spoke to Aswat al-Iraq on customary condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and its details.

Baaquba, the capital city of the restive province of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Armed group claims responsibility for destroying U.S. military vehicle

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The Thawrat al-Ishreen (1920 Revolution) Brigades on Thursday claimed responsibility for the destruction of a U.S. mine clearing vehicle with an improvised explosive device (IED) in western Baghdad, while the U.S. army denied the incident.

“The organization attacked a U.S. occupation forces’ patrol with an IED in western Baghdad, resulting in the destruction of a U.S. mine removing vehicle and killing and wounding its crew,” read a release by the organization as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

However, the U.S. army denied the reported attack.

“Reports of the attack were incorrect as the army reports did not register any attacks that targeted U.S. forces in Baghdad on Thursday,” a U.S. army source told Aswat al-Iraq.

Five family members killed, child wounded in Falluja

Five persons, from the same family, were killed and a child was wounded in an armed attack in southern Falluja, a security source said on Thursday.

“Unidentified gunmen launched an armed attack on a house in al-Hakielat region in central al-Amieriya district, southern Falluja, killing five family members and injuring a three-year child,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Falluja, the largest city in Anbar, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

Islamic State of Iraq claims responsibility for CBI attack

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

The self-styled Islamic State of Iraq on Thursday claimed responsibility for the attack on the Central Bank of Iraq, during which 19 people were killed or wounded.

Official spokesman of the Baghdad Operations Command, Maj. General Qassem Atta, had said last Sunday (June 13) that security forces foiled an attempt to storm the CBI in al-Rashied street in central Baghdad.

“Four gunmen were killed and 15 citizens were killed or wounded in the operation,” the spokesman added.
