NATO suffers deadliest days this year in Afghanistan

by Karim Talbi Karim Talbi –

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

KABUL (AFP) –

Thirteen NATO soldiers have been killed in two days in Afghanistan, marking one of the deadliest bouts for the alliance this year as critics warn of increased Taliban momentum.

Seven Americans, two Australians and one French soldier were killed on Monday as they pursued a nearly nine-year war against an insurgent militia that is seeking to overthrow the Western-backed government.

Three more NATO soldiers were killed in the south on Tuesday, two in a bomb attack and a British soldier during a gun battle, said the Ministry of Defence in London and the ISAF.

Furthermore, two foreign contractors, one of them American, were killed in a suicide attack on an Afghan police training centre in the southern city of Kandahar, on Monday.

The deaths of 10 NATO soldiers made Monday the deadliest day for foreign troops in Afghanistan since 14 Americans, including 11 US soldiers, died in two helicopter crashes on October 26, 2009.

Of the 13 NATO soldiers killed on Monday and Tuesday, all but the French and Australians were killed in the south, the heartland of the Taliban and the scene of a massive Western military build-up.

The (Taliban Movement) has vowed to unleash a new campaign of attacks on diplomats, lawmakers and foreign forces.

It claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on a meeting last week at which delegates from across Afghanistan's political spectrum backed President Hamid Karzai's plans to give jobs and money to militants who lay down their arms.

Many analysts have dismissed such efforts, pointing out that the Taliban (leaders) were not invited to the meeting and that escalating violence has caused the deaths of more NATO soldiers in the first five months than in the same period previously.

NATO, US and Afghan soldiers are preparing their biggest offensive yet against the Taliban in Kandahar province, with total foreign troop numbers set to peak at 150,000 by August.

Officials said Afghan and foreign forces had killed 37 (alleged Taliban fighters) in operations late Monday in Kandahar and the western province of Badghis.

ISAF Joint Command - Afghanistan

2010-06-CA-024

KABUL, Afghanistan (June 8, 2010) -

An Afghan-international security force detained a number of individuals suspected of insurgent activity (resistance to NATO forces) in Helmand Province last night.

The combined security force detained the individuals while searching a series of compounds west of Marjah, after intelligence information discovered militant activity.

Another Afghan-international security force detained two individuals suspected of insurgent activity (resistance to NATO forces) as the force tracked a Taliban weapons facilitator in Kandahar Province last night.

The suspected (Taliban fighters) were detained by the combined force at a compound north of the village of Mollakalo Nikeh, Zharay district, after intelligence information revealed insurgent activity.

Approximately 45 kilograms of wet opium was also found on site.

A joint Afghan-international patrol found three weapons caches in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan Province, yesterday.

The cache consisted of 23 rocket propelled grenades, five 82mm mortar rounds, 17 rocket propelled grenade fuel cells, 2,000 7.62mm rounds, a number of artillery fuses and a number of weapons parts. The cache was destroyed.

No shots were fired and no one was harmed during the above operations.

Afghan National Security Forces along with their ISAF partners conducted an operation south of Rowzeh Bagh, Herat Province, Saturday afternoon, to disrupt a Taliban network responsible for supplying improvised explosive device material, weapons and supplies in Helmand Province.

After surrounding the compounds where members of the (Taliban Movement) were suspected to be, Afghan Special Police called for the individuals to surrender. One (Taliban fighter) was killed when he exited a compound and presented an imminent threat with a weapon to the combined force. The combined force ensured the rest of the compound residents exited the compound safely.

Afghan police took possession of the insurgent (Taliban fighter) who was killed, and several men were detained by the combined force. No civilians were injured in the operation.
