A US drone fired two missiles into a militant compound in Pakistan's tribal area, killing at least 10 Pakistani Taliban fighters, local security officials said.

The strike targeted Inzarkas village, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district near the border with Afghanistan.

"The missiles struck a (Taliban) compound in the village, killing at least 10 rebels," a senior Pakistani security official in the area told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Another security official confirmed the strike and casualties.

US forces have been waging a covert drone war on the northwestern tribal belt, where (Pakistani Taliban fighters) have carved out havens in mountainous areas outside direct government control.

More than 900 people have been killed in over 100 drone strikes in Pakistan since August 2008.
