Tripartite Summit Meeting Between Medvedev, Assad, and Mesha'al in Damascus

Resheq: The summit meeting proved failure of attempts to eliminate Hamas

[ 12/05/2010 - 06:25 PM ]

DAMASCUS, (PIC)--

The tripartite summit meeting in Damascus grouping Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad, and Hamas political bureau chairman Khaled Mesha'al proved failure of attempts to eliminate Hamas from the Arab, Palestinian, and international political scene, Ezzet Al-Resheq, political bureau member of Hamas, said.

He told Quds Press on Wednesday that the meeting was historic and very important since it was the first time that Medvedev met with Mesha'al.

The meeting proved that Hamas is an influential player in the Middle East conflict and proved failure of the American policy and the international quartet conditions that targeted isolating and eliminating Hamas, Resheq said.

He pointed out that Hamas has encouraged the Russian role in the Middle East to counter the American one.

The summit reflected a message that the policy of besieging Hamas and renewing sanctions on Syria was wrong and did not enjoy international unanimity, the Hamas leader underlined, noting that the Russian president said that he was meeting with Hamas in its capacity as a national liberation movement.

He said that the discussions tackled the peace process, the siege on Gaza, national reconciliation, and the prisoners' exchange deal.

Mishaal explained that the current peace process was heading to a dead-end and would not succeed as long as it did not meet the minimum aspirations of the Palestinian people and as long as the USA maintained its bias in favor of the "Zionist enemy", Resheq said, adding that Mesha'al appreciated the Russian stand towards the siege on Gaza and asked for more Russian pressures to end it.

He said that Mishaal explained that Hamas backed reconciliation but that the American veto was impeding it and asked Russia to contribute in lifting that veto.

Mesha'al finally held the Israeli government responsible for obstructing the prisoners' exchange deal, Resheq said, adding that Hamas was not concerned with retaining the Israeli soldier but was interested in freeing the Palestinians who are serving multiple life sentences in Israeli occupation jails.
