Islamophobia in the US, May 13-21, 2016, a CAIR Report

May 21, 2016

Muslim Head Covering Leads to Road Rage and More in Murfreesboro

The Muslim woman, who wears on Islamic head scarf (hijab), said she was exiting off highway 840 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., when a white male in his 40s driving a white Chevrolet Silverado allegedly began spitting at her vehicle and then tried to run her off the road.

As the Muslim woman tried to avoid the man's attack, he allegedly screamed "f**king terrorist" and other obscenities. When the Muslim woman got stuck in traffic while seeking to escape the assault, the attacker allegedly bumped his vehicle into that of the victim. He then got out of his vehicle and reportedly hit her window with his fists, while screaming "I will f**king kill you." When the alleged victim told the attacker she was taking photographs of him, he fled the scene.

Muslim Lives Matter.

CAIR, AMAC Call for State, Federal Hate Crime Probes of Attack on Tenn. Muslim Woman

(WASHINGTON, DC, 5/20/16) The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and the Tennessee based American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC) today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate an alleged attack yesterday on a Muslim woman in that state as a possible hate crime.

"We call on local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to treat this apparent hate attack with the seriousness it deserves and to bring the strongest possible charges against the alleged perpetrator," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

"We thank local police for their prompt and professional investigation, and hope the information provided by the alleged victim will lead to a swift arrest and prosecution," said AMAC Executive Director Paul Galloway.

Earlier this month, CAIR's Houston office called on the FBI and state law enforcement authorities to investigate an apparently bias-motived threat to bomb a local Islamic center.

Also in May, CAIR offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator of a hate attack on a Muslim woman in Washington, D.C., during which the attacker allegedly shouted religious slurs and statements of support for GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

CAIR's Oklahoma chapter recently welcomed state and federal hate crime investigations of the stabbing of a Savanna, Okla., gas station clerk who was reportedly called a "terrorist" by the alleged attacker.

Hooper said these threats and attacks come at a time of rising Islamophobia nationwide, prompted at least in part by anti-Muslim rhetoric employed by public figures like Donald Trump.

WHAT: Press Conference to Discuss Lawsuit Against USCIS
WHEN: Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 12:15 pm. - 12:45 pm.
WHERE: U.S. Federal Courthouse, 111 S. 10th St., St. Louis, MO 63102

"This lawsuit challenges the Controlled Application Review and Resolution Program (CARRP), a secret government program that holds Muslim immigration applicants to a higher legal standard," said Jim Hacking, lead attorney on the case. "While many are troubled by the spread of anti-Muslim rhetoric during this election cycle, including discussions regarding whether to ban Muslims from immigrating to America, this lawsuit challenges the current discriminatory practices of USCIS and the Department of Homeland Security."

"What's truly disturbing about CARRP is that there is no way to challenge inclusion in the program, it was not authorized by Congress and there is no deadline to resolve these cases," said Faizan Syed, executive director of CAIR-Missouri. "Muslims living in America who are qualified to become citizens have to wait for years because of this discriminatory program."

The plaintiffs are lawful permanent residents who come from all over the world - Iraq, Pakistan, Egypt, Bosnia, Nigeria, Albania and Palestine. The group includes business owners, students, teachers, and religious leaders.

The lawsuit was filed by the Hacking Law Practice, LLC, an immigration litigation law firm located in Webster Groves, in cooperation with CAIR-MO.

U.S. Muslims to Begin Month-Long Ramadan Fast

CAIR offers Muslim communities 'Sharing Ramadan Resource Guide'

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/17/16) On or about June 6, the Muslim community in America and around the world will begin the month-long fast of Ramadan (rom-a-don).

[*NOTE: Because the beginning of Islamic lunar months depends on the actual sighting of the new moon, the start and end dates for Ramadan may vary. Consult local Muslim communities for the beginning and end dates of Ramadan. GO TO: http://www.islamicfinder.com ]

Ramadan is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from break of dawn to sunset. The fast is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint and generosity, while obeying God's commandments. Fasting (along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the "five pillars" of Islam.

The end of Ramadan will be marked by communal prayers called "Eid ul-Fitr," or Feast of the Fast-Breaking on or about July 6.

To assist local Muslim community leaders, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has produced a "Sharing Ramadan Resource Guide 2016" that offers step-by-step advice on hosting an interfaith iftar, or fast-breaking meal, with their fellow Americans of other faiths and backgrounds.

SEE: CAIR Sharing Ramadan Resource Guide 2016

The resource guide includes instructions on forming a "Sharing Ramadan" committee, a sample media advisory for an iftar, advice on reaching out to local media, an advertisement for the event, text for a "Welcome to Our Ramadan Fast-Breaking" brochure, frequently-asked questions about Ramadan, and a sample event program and newspaper advertisement.

CAIR Asks NY Rep. Peter King to Apologize for Using Derogatory Term for Japanese

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/13/16) The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Rep. Peter King (R-NY) to apologize for his use of a derogatory term to describe the Japanese people earlier today on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

In a discussion of presidential campaign politics, King said "why pay for the J*ps, why pay for the Koreans."

Video: Rep. Peter King (R-NY) Uses Derogatory Term for Japanese on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'

"It is unconscionable for a national elected official to use such a derogatory term to describe the Japanese people, or by extension, Japanese Americans," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. "We ask Representative King to apologize and to refrain from further use of derogatory language targeting any national, ethnic or minority group."

King has previously engaged in smears targeting the American Muslim community.

In 2011, King, then chairman of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, held five hearings on the American Muslim community. After those hearings, which included 18 witnesses, King failed to produce the promised evidence to support his stigmatization of America's Muslims.

Not a single witness attempted to factually validate the congressman's allegation of a Muslim community run by extremists. Five of the six law enforcement representatives who testified did not support King's assertion that Muslims do not cooperate with law enforcement.
