Commander of the Iranian revolutionary guards, Qassim Sulaymani, threatened to kill a number of Sunni leaders who will join the coalition of Muqtada Al-Sadr Haidar Al-Abadi. Iraqi security kill 13 Islamic State militants in Mosul

An Iraqi security source said on Sunday that 13 members of Islamic State group were killed and two others were arrested during a security operation in Mosul.

In statements to Tasnim News Agency, the source said that a preemptive security operation was launched on Sunday afternoon to track down Islamic State militants at Tal al-Sabt village in Hamam al-Alil district, 20 km south of Mosul.

According to the source, the security operation left 13 IS militants dead. Two more IS were arrested in the campaign, added the source.

Meanwhile, the same source said that four people were wounded after two bombs exploded in Tel Keppe district, 20 km north of Mosul, earlier in the day.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq earlier this month with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.

The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city. Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.

Seven Islamic State members killed in firefight with police forces in Mosul

Seven Islamic State members were killed Saturday in a firefight with police forces in the group’s previously proclaimed capital Mosul, a military commander was quoted as saying.

Speaking to BasNews website, Commander of Nineveh Operations Maj. Gen. Nejm al-Jabouri said that the seven IS members were trying to infiltrate into al-Shoura district in southern Mosul, prompting security forces to clash with them.

“The clashes between the two sides left seven IS militants dead,” al-Jabouri said, adding that a manhunt was launched in search of the other infiltrators.

Earlier in the day, two Islamic State members wearing badges of the pro-government Popular Mobilization Forces were arrested inside a house in al-Shohada district in southern Fallujah.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced in July 2017 liberation of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from IS militants, who had captured it in 2014. More than 25,000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016.

A government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and a U.S.-led international coalition, has been fighting the Islamic State group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country. 

10 Islamic State members killed in Mosul security operation

Ten of Islamic State were killed Saturday in a security operation in southern Mosul, the Security Media Center announced.

“Swat forces, backed by U.S.-led international coalition warplanes, carried out a preemptive security operation in al-Shoura district in southern Mosul, targeting a seven-kilometer-long cave used as a hiding place by IS militants,” the center was quoted by Mawzain News as saying in a statement.

“According to intelligence reports, 10 IS militants were killed in the security operation,” added the center.

Earlier in the day, five Islamic State terrorists were arrested in the eastern side of Mosul.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Seven Islamic State members killed in army airstrike in Salahuddin

Seven Islamic State members were killed in an airstrike carried out by the Iraqi army in Salahuddin province, DPA reported.

In remarks on Wednesday, Col. Mohamed Khalil al-Bazi, from Salahuddin Operations Command, said “the shelling took place on Wednesday in al-Shai region in Mutaibija, east of Samarra, leaving seven fighters killed and two motorbikes destroyed.”

The shelling, according to the source, “targeted two rest houses and tunnels that were discovered through drones.” The dormant cells in Mutaibija, “changed its style and reduced number of its militants to avoid airstrikes,” it added.

Thousands of militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

A total of 79 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 99 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in July 2018, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve and its partners continue to pursue the lasting defeat of Daesh (ISIS) in designated parts of Iraq and Syria.

Operation Roundup, which began May 1 to accelerate the defeat of Daesh in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and Iraqi-Syrian border region, has continued to gain ground and remove terrorists from the battlefield through offensive operations coupled with precision Coalition strike support.

Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve and its partner forces' operations are exerting pressure on Daesh senior leaders and associates, as well as degrading, disrupting and dismantling Daesh organizational structures throughout Iraq and Syria.

Operation Roundup will continue to target Daesh remnants as the Coalition remains committed to the lasting defeat of Daesh to increase peace and stability in the region, and to protect all our homelands from Daesh's terrorist threat.

Weekly Strike Summary

Between August 20 and August 26, Coalition military forces conducted 18 strikes consisting of 26 engagements in Iraq and Syria.

This Coalition strike release contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing, or remotely piloted aircraft, rocket propelled artillery and ground-based tactical artillery. 

A strike, as defined in the Coalition release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location. For example, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone Daesh vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against a group of Daesh-held buildings and weapon systems in a compound, having the cumulative effect of making that facility harder or impossible to use. Strike assessments are based on initial reports and may be refined. 

CJTF-OIR does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual ammunition impact points against a target. The information used to compile the daily strike releases is based on 'Z' or Greenwich Mean Time.
